“Mortgage protection insurance” is a marketing term often used for life insurance intended to help a beneficiary manage a mortgage or other housing costs if the insured person dies. Depending on the policy, benefits may be level or decreasing and may be paid to a person or, in some arrangements, directly to a lender.

It is different from private mortgage insurance (PMI), which generally protects a lender from borrower default, and different from homeowners insurance, which covers specified property and liability risks.
